Yay, Just back from flighting 😀 🐕 Karat 😍 and its a great full moon for woodcock.
Such brilliant fun this weekend shooting with great friend and trialler Sarah Miles. With the HP from our Karat and the R from Sarah’s labrador Gracie it was a fabulous way to work the dogs and definitely a great way to train. Thanks to Peter Howard for advice on feeding the ducks we have gone from 0 to 29 💪 and the maize is keeping the birds, thanks Peter, oooh loving playing at keepering 😍
So looking forward to watching the last day of the KC HPR Championship tomorrow. With just 4 dogs through to the 2nd day we wish good luck to all 4 runners but I admit to a special wish to good friend and mentor Maureen Nixon running the only GSP tomorrow the wonderful Quix 💪🥂🐕👏. Go Maureen !!!
Congratulations to Hari Lampart who is off to the KC HPR Championship tomorrow with Aytee Jessie Jay. It was great to watch Hari and “Myrtle” finish top dog with a 2nd at the GLPC Open Trial at Ancrum today, the last to qualify for the Championship. Well done Hari, we’ll be there to cheer you on !
They’ve hunted steep gully sides with thick undergrowth all day long. Well done gang, your first day and more than 15 brace picked well behind the guns, you’ve been amazing….Karat, I think you have finally found your vocation!
Keeping well back, waiting for birds in the borders with Fatlips Castle in the background
This beautiful 6 month old Aytee GSP bitch was born this spring from a line of UK champions. Her name is Coco and she is a gorgeous dog who is of course, much loved by her owners.
She was born in New Zealand in our “P” litter from AI and 3 of the 6 puppies had tan markings, which as you probably know are not recognised by the UK or NZ Kennel Club GSP breed standard.
The point of sharing is that once the litter arrived we found that there is a genetic test that can track this colour so we tested all Aytee dogs and discovered that the ability to ‘unblock’ the tan colour had appeared genetically from 2 different sires.
Tests showed that Aytee Isadora could not produce the tan colour or carry the rare gene that ‘unblocks’ that colour, but when she was mated to produce our K litter some of those puppies had this rare ‘unblocking’ gene and through testing, one of these was later shown to be Aytee Kimono, the dam of our ‘P’ litter.
The sire of the ‘P’ litter was also tested, showing that he too, carried the rare ‘unblocking’ gene and by mating those 2 dogs together Aytee produced some tan marked puppies. Of course this is not a health issue, but by doing a simple saliva swab on your dog and having a gene test done, you can find out if your dog is a carrier of this ‘unblocking’ gene. We are lucky that this simple test exists which is inexpensive and no vet is necessary. Following our experience I would advise any owner to test their GSP before breeding because the gene will not be limited to Aytee dogs and it is a sensible way to guard against taking the colour forward.
Without knowledge nature can stay in charge however much we try 😏
Thankyou again to Coco and her owners for sharing this lovely picture and to all the owners of our “P” litter and to all Aytee owners, enjoy your dogs !
Congratulations to Gina Brown and ‘Bodi’ sire of our “N”, “O” and “P”(NZ) litters today, who was made up to Ch Graygees Gigolo at the GSPA Champ Show. Fantastic result for you both ! Gina and Bodi also won BIS under breed judge Denise Gatcliffe.
Huge thankyou to Lloyd Birch for setting up a fabulous shootover day yesterday in Derbyshire. It was an awesome walk to an awesome ground and I can’t remember a more enjoyable day working the dogs … such a fabulous gang of guns Lloyd, Malin, Chris, Ian and Lee who worked brilliantly for the dogs. Massive thanks to you all and to the host and hats off to keeper Shane who guided us so well.
